The Key
I found the key to a healthy life in April 2007. All I did was look at God’s Word to see what He had to say about food, then I looked at current health advice and took what aligned with God’s Word.
As a side effect, my family all lost weight and have never been fitter or healthier than they are right now. Importantly, my family have always struggled with their weight and have all at some stage been in the obese category and I have nearly been there even when trying to diet and exercise! My father is still in the morbidly obese category because he refuses to eat what we eat.
Mum
My Mum is 165cm (5’5″). Healthy weight for height according to BMI (18.5-25) is 50.4-68kg (110.9-149.6lb). She weighed 90kg (198lb), she now weighs 72kg (158.4lb) and is still gradually losing weight – lost 18kg (39.6lb). Unfortunately we started taking waist measurements after we had already started this.
Brendan
My brother is 176cm (~5’9.5″). Healthy weight for height according to BMI (18.5-25) is 57.3-77.4kg (126.1-170.3lb). He weighed 100kg (220lb), he now weighs 76.6kg (168.5lb) and is now in the healthy weight range – lost 23.4kg (51.5lb). He is still gradually losing weight. Also, need to take into account that Brendan has Mosaic Down Syndrome and one of the health related issues is obesity.
Myself
I am 178cm (5’10”). Healthy weight for height according to BMI (18.5-25) is 58.6-79.2kg (128.9-174.2lb). I weighed 89kg (195.8lb), I was down to 66kg (145.2lb) but I have found that around 68kg (149.6lb) seems to be the best weight for me – at this weight my waist is 68cm (26.8in).
Slow and Steady
Although we lost weight, it happened very, very slowly over a long period of time and most importantly, we were not doing this to lose weight but to improve our health and quality of life.
Energy
The one thing that my Mum said that she noticed the most was the HUGE increase in energy. My Mum is 67 (nearly 68) and she has energy to burn!!! Actually, I have to agree with her. Since doing this, I bounce out of bed and have energy to burn. When swimming hard, yes, I do get tired, but previously I used to feel like i was dragging another person along with me. Now I feel strong in the water and I recover much faster.
Health
I used to suffer from allergies all the time and since doing this, are normally not present. Also, my family has suffered hardly any illness since doing this. In fact, the only illness I have suffered has been when I have been eating processed food as an experiment to see the effects on my body. So far, the proof has been in the pudding – so to speak.
My brother had not been sick the entire time he had been doing this. Recently he went away for a week and ate the food when he was away and he had his first cold in nearly 3 years!!! He got it just after he got back from camp (within about a day or so) so he must have picked it up whilst he was away. Interestingly whilst he was away he could not eat as he usually eats. Also, interestingly, he is exposed to sick people all the time because he works in a Pharmacy and yet he has not been sick. However, because he was back home I was feeding him his normal healthy food and he recovered quickly.
ADDENDUM
25th March 2011
My Dad has been following this as well. I had to make some changes to the food he eats because he has diverticulosis which can flare up into diverticulitis, he also has diabetes insipidus and he has multiple other health problems as well.
To cut a very long story short, Dad was also suffering from high blood pressure over 160/95 (Stage II hypertension). He was put onto medication and if he did not take his medication his blood pressure skyrocketed. So, I put my foot down and insisted that he do what we were doing. Since then
